What is Chemometrics

Chemometrics is a branch of chemistry that studies the application of mathematical and statistical methods to chemical data. The International Chemometrics Society (ICS) defines it as:

"A chemical discipline that uses mathematical and statistical methods to: design/select optimal procedures and experiments, provide maximum chemical information by analyzing data, give a graphical representation of this information, in other words information aspects of chemistry."

Chemometrics can be defined as the branch of chemistry that uses mathematical, statistical, and logical methods to:

  • Design, select, and optimize procedures and experiments;
  • Extract the maximum possible information about the system under examination through data analysis;
  • Provide a graphical representation of this information.

It's clear how Chemometrics accompanies the chemical process throughout all its phases, from sampling to optimization of methods and procedures, and conversion of raw data into information. Chemometrics employs various methods to analyze and interpret large quantities of chemical data. Among the main approaches we find:

  • Experimental Design (DOE - Design of Experiments): consists of the systematic planning of experiments to maximize information obtained with the optimal number of experiments.
  • Data Structure Exploration: methods such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) enable true exploratory analysis by reducing data dimensionality and identifying hidden patterns, correlations, and homogeneous groups of samples.
  • Multivariate process monitoring: statistical techniques to monitor complex processes with many variables simultaneously.
  • Regression Models, such as Partial Least Squares (PLS) Regression, are used to predict quantitative response variables based on predictor variables characterized by multicollinearity (e.g., multivariate calibration through NIR spectroscopy).
  • Classification Models, based on algorithms such as Discriminant Analysis, LDA, QDA, are used to predict qualitative responses (membership in predefined classes) of new samples.

Knowledge is power (= key to innovation and profit). But the getting of new knowledge can be complex, time consuming, and costly. To be successful in such an enterprise, you must learn about learning. Statistics is a catalyst for the learning process [G. E. P. Box, W. G. Hunter, and J. S. Hunter, Statistics for Experimenters, 1978].

Applications of Chemometrics

Among the application fields of Chemometrics, we can mention:

  • Quality Control for Manufacturing Industries
  • Process Analytical Technology (PAT)
  • Process Monitoring and Control
  • Food Traceability
  • Forensic Science
  • QSAR/QSPR and REACH
  • Genomics, Proteomics, and Metabolomics
  • Experimental Design and Optimization
  • Drug & material design
  • Image Analysis
  • Applications in Industrial and Environmental Settings

Through these applications, chemometrics bridges the gap between complex mathematical theories and practical solutions to real-world problems across multiple industries and scientific domains.
